Longmont "Economic Development" Project is Considering the Sugar Beet Factory Location
Colorado is seeking out "opportunity zones" in the Front Range area for an economic development project. This project would take zones that are not economically successful right now and exempt them from certain taxes. The point would be to promote new businesses to come into the area and boost the economy. Unfortunately, the sugar beet factory is one of the locations that is being targeted for the project. Some people are ready and eager to replace the factory with something new because it is "long-abandoned and fire-prone". To them, it is taking up valuable space that could be used for business. But in my opinion, the factory is a valuable part of our history. It would be heart breaking to see it go. The factory is in poor shape right now, but I hope there is a better solution than simply tearing it down.
